Flannery O'Conner. Wise Blood is a good start.

What about "Night of the Hunter" by Davis Grubb? His collection of Weird Tales (reviewed here) might also be of interest. I quite like Carson McCullers too (e.g. "The Heart is A Lonely Hunter".)

I love William Faulkner. Suggestion is to start easy with As I Lay Dying before Light in August before moving to his more famous work The Sound and the Fury.

I happen to have As I Lay Dying. I started reading it last year but I had too much homework at the time. (Hooray for graduating!)

I've seen "The Little Friend" by Donna Tartt recommended as southern Gothic.
